Guidelines for Holiday Hiring of Teenagers

With the holiday season upon us, teenagers are looking for part-time jobs. The holiday season is second only to summer in the number of teenagers working. To assist employers when hiring teenagers DOLI is providing the information regarding employment certificates and other child labor requirements. To view the requirements click here.


11th Annual VOSH Conference To Be Held

The 11 th Annual Virginia Occupational Safety and Health Conference will be held May 31 – June 2, 2006 at the Hyatt Regency – Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia. The theme of this year's conference is Coming Together... Saving Lives.” Look for the conference brochure online and in the mail in January 2006.

Virginia Apprenticeship Council Recognizes Outstanding Apprentices for 2005

The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry announced that the Virginia Apprenticeship Council has recognized four apprentices as Virginia’s Outstanding Apprentices for 2005. The Council, in association with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, sponsors the awards program, which honors outstanding apprentices each year who have completed their training programs and are nominated by their sponsoring organizations. VOSH Launches Spray-on Bedliner Local Emphasis Program

The Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH) Program has initiated a Local Emphasis Program (LEP) aimed at reducing occupational exposure to methylene diphenyl isocyanate (MDI). This is in conjunction with federal OSHA’s Region III Local Emphasis for Spray-On Bedlining Operations involving exposure to MDI which was initiated on October 1, 2004. VPP Milestones

Significant milestones were achieved this year by the following companies which are VPP member sites in Virginia:

Altavista Power Station

On November 1, 2005 the Altavista Power Station had reached a 15-year milestone of no lost time accidents. In addition, the site has not had an OSHA recordable incident in one year.

Ciba Specialty Chemicals-Suffolk Site

The Suffolk Site has reached a Ciba-North American all time record of 5.5 million hours worked without a lost time accident.

In October 2005, the site was accepted into the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program (VEEP) of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality in recognition of its achievement in environmental stewardship.

Frito-Lay Lynchburg

The Lynchburg site received the 2005 Safety Award at the Frito-Lay Corporate conference in Dallas, TX.

Georgia Pacific-Brookneal OSB Plant

On March 7, 2005, Georgia Pacific's Brookneal OSB plant reached one year without an OSHA recordable incident. On November 18, 2005 the Brookneal site achieved 611 days without an OSHA recordable incident.

GE-Winchester Lamp Plant

This GE site celebrated its 30 th anniversary on October 1, 2005. Five and 10-year accident-free awards were given to employees who had achieved this milestone in their careers.

International Paper-Converting Innovation Center

In November the IP-CIC site in Franklin completed its eighth year of operation and has not experienced a lost time work injury since the plant opened.

International Paper-Franklin Paper Mill

In November the Sheet converting plant completed 18 1/2 months without a recordable incident. In addition, the Mill's Woodyard has finished a complete year without a recordable incident. The site as a whole continues to keep recordable incidents at level 75% below the industry average.

Lunenburg Correctional Center

The first VPP STAR correctional facility in the nation continues to be recognized for its leadership with the Virginia Office of Worker' Compensation's "Safety Star Award" for exceptional and innovative efforts in safety of the employees of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Toray Plastics, Inc

In November The Front Royal site continued on a 3 ½-year streak of no lost time accidents. This is the second longest period in the site’s history without a lost time accident

XPEDX-Roanoke Division

On November 4, 2005, Xpdex in Salem, VA had achieved 265 days without an OSHA recordable incident.

Checklist Offered for Starting Boilers After a Lay-Up Period

With the fall heating season upon us, it is not too late to consider steps to take prior to starting boilers after a lay-up period. The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors offers a checklist for those responsible for boiler operation. While the list is not all-inclusive, it can serve as a guide. White House Announces Pandemic Flu Web Site

The White House recently announced a Web site on pandemic and avian influenza. It is a central repository of flu-related information from various organizations, including OSHA. OSHA's Guidance For Protecting Workers Against Avian Flu and Avian Influenza: Protecting Poultry Workers at Risk Safety and Health Information Bulletin are among the many resources featured on the site sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
